Back in the olden days Easter Week or White Week as it was named and referenced to because people wore white clothing and were baptized.
Many people believe the word Easter came from hebdomada alba, which translates to “White Week”.
Through the years, the translation was altered to esostarum in the German language and then translated into Easter in English.
In Spanish, Easter is known as Pascua, which means “passover” which is why Jesus went to Jerusalem and then of course he was crucified.
Easter is really the entire season of the 40 day Lent period which ends on Easter Sunday to celebrate Christ’s resurrection.
Lent is a time of meditation and reflection on one’s life. The 40 day period represents the 40 days that Jesus spent alone in the wilds before starting his following and ministry.
The week before Easter is called “Holy Week” and includes “Maundy Thursday”, which commemorates Jesus’ last supper with the disciples.
Good Friday celebrates Jesus’ crucifixion.
Holy Saturday, is celebrated as the transition between the his crucifixion and his resurrection.
The 50-day period following Easter Sunday is called Eastertide and includes a celebration of Jesus’ ascension into heaven.
This is why we celebrate Easter even though it is popularized in the USA with Easter Baskets, Tons of candy and an Easter egg Hunt.
